Mapping Your Script
A Pre-CAMERAderie Webinar
3-29-25 | 10:00 am – 12:30 pm PDT
Find Your Way from Scene 1 to “The End”
This illuminating online writing seminar with Howard University professor, Idit Dvir was open to all. This mapping your script class focused on narrative writing for genre and cross genre films. Once you have learned her techniques, you can apply them to any kind of narrative.
There are plenty of screenwriting books out there that promise a foolproof formula. Follow The Hero’s Journey and hit specific beats on certain pages, and you’ll sell your script for six figures, right? If only it were that simple! Storytelling isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Your story is uniquely yours, and there’s no rigid roadmap to success. The good news? That means you have the freedom to shape the journey, and guide your protagonist to a satisfying “The End.”

Navigating Your Script Destination
Idit encouraged writers to have a clear destination before setting off. After all, it’s much easier to get somewhere when you know where you’re going! Once you have your endpoint in mind, there are plenty of exciting paths to take. Whether you follow a well-trodden route or explore unexpected detours, you’re in control of the adventure.
This online seminar will focus on figuring out what makes a story work, using three inter-related approaches:
#1: Inside Out: From finding a scene’s Major Beat to sequencing the plot.
#2: Outside In: Anchoring sequences around plot points and finding the minimum number of scenes to fill those in.
#3: Plot As You Go: For those of us who thrive on uncertainty.
Scenes from GET OUT, LADYBIRD and ALIEN were perfect samples to break down the conflict and find each scene’s Major Beats.
