Lighting is at the heart of visual storytelling and the cinematic image. It sets the tone, builds the mood, and defines the world your characters live in. This knowledge is essential for everyone on set, from camera and producing to directing, design, sound, and post.
Matthew Irving (Canon USA) and Benjamin Scott (Profoto) will give a practical presentation on set lighting strategies. They will demonstrate light shaping techniques, fixture placement, and how specific lighting decisions directly impact the final image. You will see firsthand how to combine hard and soft light to construct rich, cinematic looks efficiently.
You’ll put Canon’s latest cinema cameras—the EOS C400, C80, and C50—through their paces. You’ll also test Profoto’s newest cinema fixtures in a hands-on production environment.

Benjamin Scott
As Business Development Manager for Cinema at Profoto, Benjamin Scott collaborates with leading cinematographers, gaffers, rental houses, dealers, and production teams across North America and internationally. He helps filmmakers leverage Profoto’s cinema lighting ecosystem to create compelling visual stories through innovative lighting solutions.
Beyond his role at Profoto, Benjamin is the founder of Beneficial Entertainment and has extensive experience as a producer, production manager, writer, and director. Having worked across commercials, documentaries, branded content, and independent films, he brings a practical, hands-on understanding of both the creative and logistical sides of production.
Passionate about storytelling and technology, Benjamin enjoys helping filmmakers discover new tools and techniques that enhance creativity while making productions more efficient and effective.
Matthew Irving
Matthew Irving currently serves as a Senior Technical Specialist for Canon U.S.A. During his 27 years as a professional cinematographer, he has shot 38 feature films and a wide variety of short subjects in nearly every genre imaginable. His projeects include multiple Sundance Film Festival premieres and the “Top Ten” box office hits WAITING (starring Ryan Reynolds and Justin Long) and WAITRESS (starring Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion). Irving has lectured extensively at universities and film festivals on the topics of cinematography and film history.
