Sarah Sellman is a screenwriter and director based in Echo Park. Sarah’s feature documentary American Bear: An Adventure in the Kindness of Strangers (2015) had a limited theatrical release and educational screening tour throughout the U.S. after a lengthy festival run and was distributed by Virgil Films Entertainment. Sarah was nominated for NYU’s Oliver Stone Screenwriting Award for her surreal short film Hold Your Arms Out, which was selected for Hewlett-Packard’s inaugural post-production program at Sundance Film Festival. Sarah spent last year traveling around the world with her husband and completing several feature screenplays. While on the trip, they began a series of docushorts about female food entrepreneurs in third world countries - the first episode received over 400K views. Sarah’s original pilot Cottonwood was the winner of Project Screenplay (a pitch competition) and was recently selected Series Fest's Featuring Women Initiative’s grand prize winner. Currently, Sarah is in the midst of writing two features - Gillyfish which was selected as a finalist for the Seed&Spark fellowship at the Stowe Story Labs, and Automatons which was invited to the second round of the Sundance Sloan Commissioning Grant competition. Sarah is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an active advocate for women in film + media. She is on the board of directors for Women in Media.
