Alliance For Women Film Composers Event

May 16th, 2018 

Women in Media co hosted a curated event with the Alliance For Women Film Composers. There was an inspiring panel and discussion exploring the art, craft and business of music for film and television, through the eyes and ears of composers, songwriters, music supervisors, studio music executives and directors as well as a reception.

Women In Media hosted Networking and Nibbles + panel with guild and union representatives to demystify and clarify myths and misinformation about getting into the film unions and their roles for members. The event was for those interested in joining as well as current members who wanted to learn more about the power and protection of collective bargaining.

Networking, Nibbles, and General Assembly Inclusion Rider Luncheon

Women In Media President, Lawyer Priya Sopori spoke with us about the empowering inclusion rider language that she and her colleagues at Greenberg Glusker have crafted.

We also discussed our National Association of Broadcasters Convention presence. NAB has traditionally been very male dominated. This year, we hope you will join us there to play with gear, make social connections, and learn from seminars.

Femme Frontera: An Interview With Writer/Director Angie Reza Tures

Femme Frontera Showcase & Networking

Women In Media collaborated with the Femme Frontera Short Film Showcase for the second year in a row.

Femme Frontera is dedicated to spotlighting stories which challenge common, often false narratives. The 2017 films push, if not altogether smash, barriers in regards to gender, geographical borders, cultural identity, and oppression.

Pre Screening Networking: Above and below the line film makers met before the screening for supper and to tell each other about upcoming projects, introduce ourselves, and make work connections. After supper, we walked an entire half block to the Echo Park Film Center to watch the shorts.

#HireTheseWomen Lunch ~ Cinematography Edition

On January 7th, Women in Media was pleased to host a lunch at Canon Burbank connecting women AC’s, Grips, Gaffers, Drone Ops, Electrics, DIT’s, Steadicam, etc. to busy working Cinematographers with an eye toward getting below the line women good jobs in the film industry.

Nancy Schreiber, Ava Berkofksy, Quyen Tran, Joe White, Alan Caso, Cybel Martin, Kira Kelly, and John Smith were in attendance, and excited to #HireTheseWomen!

Local 600‘s Xiomara Comrie and IATSE‘s Vanessa Holtgrewe were on hand to answer questions about navigating unions for those already in the ICG and those who wish to join.

J.L. Fisher Dolly Class

December 2nd, 2017 – J.L. Fisher, Inc. Burbank

We covered the basic operation of the model 10 and 11 dollies, dolly accessories, and how to safely get a dolly on tracks. Additionally, we covered building a jib arm on the dolly with a center mount. There was also a facility tour and a Q&A at the end.

It was a daylong event of powerful discussions around women empowerment in entertainment, interactive workshops, and one-on-one sessions with top executives, casting directors, producers, entertainment attorneys and more!

Women In Media Self-Defense Class With Toy Lei

November 5th,  2017 – West Hollywood, CA

With the rash of allegations of sexual misconduct against multiple men in our industry, women are feeling vulnerable. We offered a class that taught women the tools and confidence to avoid conflict and have methods to fight back and get away safely.

Toy is a martial arts teacher, stunt choreographer and actor/director. She has been training in martial arts for 18 years and teaches kung fu every Sunday when she isn’t on set.
